We made these specially for Arches National Park and you can find them at the Arches Visitor Center.

I joined forces with Chad Niehaus (2009 Community Artist in the Parks), an amazing artist here in Moab who does beautiful block prints and amazing pastels.  We make hats.  He prints, then I sew.

First, we upcycle the fabric.  Usually it's old sheets we find at our local thrift store, WabiSabi.  Then, using his hand-carved linoleum blocks, Chad prints a patch on the fabric.  I then take the patch and sew it onto a ball cap or trucker hat using my grandmother's vintage 1969 Bernina sewing machine.

The good ol' zigzag stitch.

A batch of hats for Chile Pepper Bike Shop.

Picking out the thread is my favorite part.

Remember those old floral sheets your grandma had?  They might now be living life from a trucker hat, worn by a Moabite who's cruising down the bike path.

Check out Chad's stuff at www.subverwithus.comwww.moabart.com, or www.waterpocketpress.com.  He also started the Community Artist in the Parks program in 2009.  Thanks, Chad!
